About the Featured Artist Sessions (Saturday Afternoon)

Bloomington Watercolor Society is proud to feature artists of national acclaim for the Saturday afternoon workshops.

About the Beginner's Session (All day Saturday)

"Give It a Try!"       Instructors: Nancy Davis Metz, Jeanne Ellen Dutton

Have you been hesitating to “dive” into watercolor? This all-day session is designed just for you! Nancy and Jeanne will lead you through the basics of techniques and tools of the trade, and create several small paintings, ready to mat and frame.

First, beginning watercolorists learn to manipulate paint, step by step, using various mixing, glazing, and application techniques, ultimately completing a geometric painting. The second part teaches values as students prepare a simple value chart, then do a monochromatic painting of an object, e.g. a hat or an apple. After lunch, the students learn about the basics tools: paint, paper, and brushes. This involves a hands-on comparison of various surfaces, different brushes, and grades of paint. Finally, a paint-along session offers tips on negative painting, brushwork and textures. Supplies, including brushes, paints, palettes and papers, will be provided for the students to use.

About the Intermediate Breakout Sessions (Saturday morning)

"We've Got a Stamp for That!"  Instructor: Linda Meyer-Wright

Stretch your watercolor wings as you focus on the design element of texture. The primary technique is stamping, including the use of everyday materials (leaves, plastic, wax paper, sponges). In addition, students will explore carving their own stamps and basic symbols. Linda uses the X factor approach to art…Exploration and Experience. There are no mistakes in this class, just happy accidents! Mini demonstrations and applications allow you to enjoy the process, rather than focus on the end product. Students will leave with at least one personal stamp and materials for future painting or collage.

"Managing Color to Create Better Art"       Instructor: Carol Rhodes

If you want to truly understand color, this is the session for you. Carol will teach how color vision works in the brain, the secrets of color scheme selection, and how the chemistry of pigments affects the colors we see. Topics include saturation, tonality, key, and purity of colors. Then, experiment with a six color palette, blending primary “warms” and “cools” to reveal some very interesting results. The palette of colors is provided; just bring your brushes and paper and spray bottle.

"Concepts, Not Technique"       Instructor: Sara Steffey McQueen

A mandala is a visual tool that uses radial symmetry and symbolism to facilitate reflection and contemplation. This technique has been used in eastern and western art for centuries and in art therapy circles.
In this class, a number of mandalas will be presented to inspire ideas for design.  You will draw on your identification of personal strengths, beliefs, and values to create symbols, and will have access to images from around the world to inspire you.  You are encouraged to bring pictures that may reflect things of personal importance.  Sara provides lecture, examples, and guidance as the class progresses.  Then, at the conclusion, you will have the opportunity to share your work.

Materials list:
Paints and brushes
Paper (hot- or cold-pressed), preferably cut to a 12” square
A support board for the paper
Watercolor pencils
Permanent markers, resist materials, collage elements, and any mixed media in your toolbox.

Her style of teaching encourages students to expand their watercolor horizons with surprising results, including quirky impressions and colors while exploring chaos and pattern.

Carol Rhodes

Carol has been painting in watercolor for the past 16 years, and serves as treasurer of the Bloomington Watercolor Society, 2005-2012.
